Opinion: Citizens deserve open, transparent bargaining with tribal governments

February 12, 2012

During floor debate on February 10, Rep. Glenn Anderson voted against legislation that would move forward two inconsistent policies with Native American tribes in our state. On one hand, under House Bill 2232, Native American tribes would be treated like any other local government entity in the state rather than a sovereign nation. On the other hand, House Bill 2233 would set forth the process for tribal nations to become completely sovereign through retrocession, or the transfer of state jurisdiction over state tribal lands to the tribes and federal government.

Anderson attempted to amend House Bill 2232 to head off the tribes’ attempt to begin a year-long process of retrocession in House Bill 2233. The process of retrocession would allow federally recognized tribes to begin discussions with the governor and request the governor issue a proclamation to the federal government acquiescing to retrocession.
