It’s fairly unusual as a high school baseball team to only have four seniors. A team heavy in juniors and sophomores is what Stanwood Spartans baseball coach Colby Knutson will get to work with this year as a result of a lack in senior leadership.
Returning talent from last years district tournament team is highlighted by junior catcher Jeff Ness along with junior pitchers Connor Martin and 2010 All-WESCO second team reliever Andrew Bloom.
Further hopes of strengthening the Spartans pitching staff will be in the hands of senior JR Meehan and junior Kyle Johnson. Meehan is a first year Stanwood High School student after three years at Arlington. Johnson will be participating in his first varsity action this year.
Two more seniors fill the Spartans roster in the form of Steven Titus and Mike Epperson. Both will split time at first base and in the outfield.
First year letter winners in 2010, junior Pat McKenzie and sophomore Jake Campbell return in the infield. McKenzie is a strong utility player who can have his speed strongly utilized while Campbell was the Spartans starting second baseman the majority of last year.
